Island Stone: Mosaic Tile Rendering for Every Space

How do you show a mosaic in a room that hasn’t been built yet? A homeowner choosing tile for a bathroom, a shower, a kitchen backsplash, a porch or a pool wants to see exactly that: how the grout lines read across a whole wall, what a pebble floor looks like by the front door, what glass does at the shallow end. A small sample on a showroom counter can’t answer any of it. So the image has to do the selling, and it has to be as honest as the sample. That’s the job we’ve been doing for Island Stone, a tile and mosaic maker that trusts us with its mosaic tile rendering: tile room scenes indoors and out, and the catalog shots behind every new collection.

About the Client

Island Stone is a tile company from Watsonville, California, with roots on a beach in Bali, where its founders created the original mesh-backed pebble tile in 1998. Today the catalog covers glass, pebble, natural stone and ceramic tile, mosaics and stacked stone panels for every part of a home, from bathrooms and kitchens to fireplaces, patios and pools, and the stone is still hand-sorted and color-matched. Island Stone sells through dealers and distributors across the U.S., so its images often reach buyers who never hold a sample. Since 2023, we’ve completed multiple projects for the brand: about 1,000 images across dozens of collections.

The Challenge

Raised spa with a sheet waterfall spilling into a pool, clad in blue veined tile that continues along the waterline and under the water

With tile, the surface is the product. The buyer picks a colorway from the screen and expects the same tile to arrive on site. So every render works as a sample, and every sample has to pass the same checks:

  • Color and grout. The tile matches the sheet, and the grout lines stay even across the whole wall, with no drift or doubling.
  • Scale. Chip and sheet sizes follow the drawing, so a 1×1 mosaic never reads as a 2×2.
  • Layout. The pattern is centered on the wall the way an installer would set it, with cuts at the edges.
  • Stone. Pebble and natural stone keep the color spread of the sheet photo: the same mix of light and dark pieces.
  • Gloss. Glossy glass reflects the room around it, and the reflections have to make sense.

Then there’s the volume. Island Stone launches collections in many colors and finishes, and each one has to be shown where it will actually live: in pools and on patios, in kitchens and living rooms, around fireplaces and in bathroom scenes. No brand can tile a pool six times to shoot six colors. The renders had to replace the photo shoot without losing the precision of the sample.

What We Did

Glass and stone tile rendering is only as accurate as its source material, so each project starts with three files from Island Stone: photos of the tile sheets, a line drawing of the layout and a photo reference for the mood. We match the tile to the sheet photo, check scale against the drawing and only then lock the camera angles.

Pools and Water Features

Pools are where tile is hardest to judge and where the render matters most. We’ve placed tiles under water, and every scene answers a buyer’s question. What color is the water over the shallow end? For example, Sukabumi, a green-tinted stone from Bali, takes on its lagoon tone only when submerged, so the water has to be right before the tile can be. What happens after dark? Underwater lighting turns glass mosaic into a glowing band. What about the edges? We render the waterline framing and the waterfalls the design calls for.

Spaces We Render

Pools are only part of the catalog. Island Stone tile goes on floors, walls and backsplashes all over the house and the yard, so we build a scene for every place a buyer might put it: bathrooms and shower niches, outdoor showers, kitchen backsplashes and islands, home bars and coffee nooks, fireplaces and stair halls, dining room accent walls, and patios, porches and terraces.

One SKU, Every Color

Once a scene is approved, it becomes the template for a whole line. For Cobbles Tumbled, Island Stone’s own tumbled marble, we laid every color on the same porch floor and rendered each from two angles. The wide view shows how the color reads across the whole porch. The close-up by the door shows the stone itself: rounded edges, tumbled surface and the mix of light and dark pieces. A buyer can flip through the line and see only the stone change. It’s the same system behind the 3D tile visualization for TileShop, whose catalog we rendered room by room.

Room Scenes, Close-Ups and Silos

Each color gets a full kit of three shots that work as a set. The room scene sells the idea: a bathroom in large-format marble-look tile with a freestanding tub, or a home bar with a full wall of bronze geometric relief tile. The close-up sells the material. Side light picks out the herringbone texture and gold inlay of a black relief tile, and at arm’s length the veining of a marble-look tile reads as clearly as on the sample. The silo sells the SKU: a flat, straight-on view of the tile field that shows the pattern repeat and color spread across a full section, ready for product pages, dealer catalogs and spec sheets. Together, the three cover the path from “I like this room” to “I’ll order this tile”. This is where mosaic tile rendering pays off: one approved material feeds every image type, so the color in the room matches the color in the silo.

How Island Stone Uses the Renders

On islandstone.com, the renders carry the product pages. Sea Shadows, for one, appears on a bathroom vanity wall next to its sheet shots and layout drawing. When Maris launched this summer, the Instagram announcement led with our outdoor shower under a tiled arch. And since the brand sells through dealers, the same files travel further. Facings of America in Arizona opens its Maris page with our waterline close-up, and Stone and Tile uses the plunge pool wall as the main image for Maris Shallows. Since every dealer works from the same approved set, a buyer sees the same color on a dealer’s site as on the brand’s own.

We build the same image sets for other manufacturers as part of our 3D rendering for tile brands. Want to see your tile in a room that hasn’t been built yet? Send us one sheet photo and its line drawing, and we’ll show you what it can become.
